Recently we traveled to the Maryland land of wild horses to go camping for Heather’s birthday.

We don’t go camping very often but it’s something Heather really enjoys so I enjoy it as well. “Happy Wife, Happy Life!”. 🙂
As you will see; it turned out to be quite the adventure albeit a great memory.
First on the list was a to set up our home for the next two nights.. In the wind. The tent itself is supposed to be a 6 person tent. Not with our massive Queen Sized Air Mattress!!

The tent’s set up; let’s go check out our front yard! We didn’t realize how much the dunes were blocking some of the wind from the ocean. This would prove critical later that night as our little tent did its best to not launch into the stratosphere.

If you’ve ever heard of Assateague, you know that they are known for their horses. They were in the campground and along the roadway as we rode and drove. They are such beautiful, majestic creatures and so BIG.

We took time to check out a couple of breweries whilst there, including, Sinepuxent, Berlin, and Burley Oak.

Later it was time to make dinner on the camp stove and settle in for the night. By this time the wind had really picked up so we needed to huddle around the propane stove to make our burgers. We were in for a great night’s sleep but once we woke up, the tent was rocking and rolling. Heather had purchased thick, screw in stakes meant to withstand the strong winds and I for one was glad she did as I don’t know that the tent would have survived the night without them.
We spent a little extra time together in our sleeping bags before venturing out into the elements.

There is something about cooking breakfast on a camp stove. The food is always great and the coffee from to a percolator, always seems to taste just a little bit better than at home. We had to shield the flames from the wind but it was so worth it.

After breakfast we ventured on to the very bell shaped bridge called the Verrazano Bridge for a short ride into the Berlin side of Assateague. It’s a steep but fun climb up and over.

The ride was windy and short but still fun. Heather and I like to make sure to always get some physical activity in when traveling and we often bring our gravel bikes to give us all around options.
Assateague National Seashore is just on the other side of the campground and is free for America the Beautiful annual pass holders. Here we had the opportunity to see more marshland along with more horses and the overall natural beauty offered in this area. This area was pretty busy considering the wind.

They even have stations where you can measure the crabs you catch to ensure they are of legal size.

The day was full of local sightseeing but it was time to head back for something all campers must do.. SMORES! Okay so we didn’t have a camp fire going because of the insane wind and we ate them in the car but they were still so good.

We tried to have a drink too but the only comfortable place was in between the car and the tent to block the wind.

Shortly after these pictures were taken it started to rain and when Heather looked at the weather radar, it was clear we were in for a rough and wet night so we made the decision to pack it in and head home. It was a sad decision but things weren’t going to get better any time soon.

What a Windy Adventure!🌦️🌬️
